Diccionario terminológico del deporte
Diccionario terminológico del deporte is a compilation that deals with motor states and which has to be played or compete obeying some rules beyond institutionalization. It ´s organized into four parts: an introduction that explains the reasons of this work; the "boulder", that is the dictionary with 5398 terms. 4786 of them belong to sport and exercise sciences and 612 to short biography of athletes and sports figures. We can find 861 bibliographic references about the sport language in the world as well as an index with 3659 english words. All of them has its analogues in spanish. _________________________________________________________ Foreword
Paco González (*) When I was 13 or 14 years old, I thought that nobody could be driven crazy by sport as me. I loved all kind of sport and learned each rules and classifications that I could. However during these years I easily have discovered that the real world is full of crazy like me. We may say that in this "mental hospital" i´m sane enough. I couldn't say who is the nuttest, but some are the candidates who possess all the ballot papers to be elected and to top it all, we work all together: Maldini is the one who watches u17 matches between Togo and Fidji Island. Taking another obvious example, Pedro Martín does statistic with throw-ins...nevertheless, Jesús Castañón, the author of this book strongly stands out in the top ten list while working really hard. A friend of mine, Carmen Menéndez warned me that he was a very long-suffering and that his capacity of work was too exhausting (especially for those that surround him, obviously..) Reading this work, I felt scared about patience and perseverance, the lot of hours needed and all that was behind the dictionary. One has to be really passionate about sport to carry out such an outline. I recommend it like reference book for those passionate who want to look up every kind of sport modality as well as for those who do an effort to improve their vocabulary and among those I am. Journalist´s poor spelling and incorrect usage of the language is shocking! How little we know about the exact terminology of most of sports (I just find out that a female crab is not what all think it is, but a trapezoid sail). By the way I will urge the author to prepare, one day, a second part in which if possible we could make spanish so much foreignism because there are some pages that makes someone to be spaced out: skeet for clay pigeon shooting, skiff for rowing, skip (for washing machines as well as for curling) and skish (fishing)...I´m sorry Jesús you are not guilty. If you ever wanted to know the difference between an ippon and a waza-ari each time that judo was present at the Olympic Games, this is your book. A work full of curiosities (whipped egg is a swimming exercise) that reflect specifically the author´s curiosity, who is able to tell us how we could say pole vault in South America (claw), or to wonder what the hell are playing that crazy who say they practise football surnaming it australian. Only someone like Jesús who loves and respects sport could dare in a such hard and sized work with more than 5000 terms. I speak about love because he hasn´t been able to impede his love towards main characters of his work and has include more than 600 bibliographic reviews from sports professionals. From Anquetil to the mythical Babe Ruth (who were Babe Ruth?...you don´t like baseball, don´t you?) Well speaking (or writing) has to be done correctly, trying at least to use the appropriated terms that suits to each situation. Radio improvisation makes often mistakes easy to come true...even pet words that everyone use to save time and to find the exact term that reflects the best what one is thinking about. This book is full of precise terms and suits very well for we all journalists that should have a daily quick at it. We footballers nearly forgotten that a chest pass could be seen in Las Ventas, but also in handball. As far as I´m concerned it would be useful and my guide-dictionary-vademecum for any doubt that comes to me. Everyone agrees that "more reading is needed" I can merely say "better reading is needed", and if you have opened this page is because your purpose is to improve and learn. Congratulations!
