Centenary of the Real Madrid

The factory's literature

Jesús Castañón Rodríguez

The factory was the name Alfredo di Stéfano designated the Santiago Bernabéu stadium with. There, a lot of people worked, ran and jumped in order to make the people’s dreams become a reality. Their moves on the field, dribbles, goals… have accelerated the beats for a century; have captured hundreds of voices which see how the creators generate their artistic work live; have scattered happiness over all corners of the city to the extent of transform it.

On the other side of the touch line, the Real Madrid has also managed to seduce words thanks to the participation of numerous members of the Spanish Academy, of a Nobel prize for Literature and of numerous writers who have transformed the white club into poetry, novel, stories, essays and theater. This is its little known history.

White poetry

The white poetry has sung moments of powerful emotions and has portrayed great players from all the times in a lyric way.

Special moments

They appear in the Manuel Mantero and Manuel Vázquez Montalbán’s poems. The first one tells the feelings the death of a spectator causes him, whose emotion and passion for a white goal cause a heart attack. And the second one includes a reference to the Real Madrid’s hegemony, in the period of di Stéfano as footballer in poems dedicated to the competitor wearing blue and red shirt.

Footballers

The compositions dedicated to footballers are more numerous, especially the forward line.

In the goal, Ricardo Zamora is remembered. Pedro Montón Puerto evokes the child’s memories when he imitated his idol in the parks, with affection and ingenuousness.

As back Pirri and Jacinto Quincoces are important. Manuel Alcántara observes in the first one values based on impetus, continuous struggle, technical dominion with the ball and the fact of having an aptitude for transmitting this vigor to the tier. For the second one, Federico Muelas throws into relief the mythological dimension of this representative of the Spanish fury (strong play, impressive innings, conclusive attacks and clearances) and José García Nieto sings the commercial and advertising life which subjects to his will to a life based on fame spreading trousers, cosmetics and candies.

However, the forward line is the one which hogs a large number of verses. Thus, Pedro de Miranda exalts the centre forward Pahíño figure, who had a great renown in the fifties and in the World Cup held in Brazil. José María Pemán throws into relief the supporters’ worry due to the kidnapping of di Stéfano in 1962 in Venezuela. And Alfonso Ussía emphasizes the Emilio Butragueño’s power in the area.

Novel

The Real Madrid becomes fictional theme from the thirties with Jardiel Poncela, who makes God visits the Earth and becomes member of the club in an avant-garde novel.

Later, the social atmosphere of the great European triumphs is emphasized thanks to the works by Fernando Vizcaíno Casas and Juan José Armas Marcelo in order to develop different stories.

The works by Wenceslao Fernández Flórez are great quality, who reflects on the essence of football in the stadium and promotes the sports spirit in order to ennoble daily life.

The Final Cup in 1995, which was held in the Santiago Bernabéu stadium between the teams: Deportivo from La Coruña and Valencia, and which was also adjourned due to a great storm, became an inspiration for the youthful novel Y decirte alguna estupidez, por ejemplo, te quiero.
