Stories

One of the favorite genres for the literary expression of football has been the one based on stories.
The list of authors who have paid attention to the Real Madrid is varied. It is made up of writers such as Carlos Casares, Agustín Cerezales, Justo Navarro, Antonio D. Olano, José Luis Sanpedro, Matías Sánchez Carrasco; of journalists such as Manuel Hidalgo and Manuel Vicent, of politicians such as the president of the Autonomous Community, Joaquín Leguina; and also of the footballer Jorge Valdano.

They reflect the supporter’s life or the fan woman’s who dies because of a traffic accident following her beloved team with her husband rather than die easily upset due to the jealousy. They also describe the passionate life in the stadium, specially in the face to face encounters with the Barcelona F.C. and the Atlético from Madrid, both in a social dimension and in later repercussions in the life as couple. And fantastic situations are also outstanding like the visit of the creatures from outer space’s flying saucer who interpret football as a modern religion or like the transformation of La Cibeles into “Papá Noel” (Father Christmas) who transmits special values in order to get the everybody’s happiness.
And out of all the ones, it is important the fact of having lived through the match between flies and boxes which is narrated by Camilo José Cela together with Pablo Hernández Coronado, one of the most famous leaders belonging to the “white entity”.

The Valdano’s anthologies

As a result of the importance of football and of his proliferation of deeply moved stories, Jorge Valdano has worked on two anthologies, edited by Alfaguara, in 1995 and 1998. They were entitled Cuentos de fútbol and Cuentos de fútbol 2 and got a notable success as far as criticism and public are concerned.

Essay

The journalistic marginal notes with literary nuance and the essays about the club start in 1926, when the author César M. Arconada dedicates an interview to Félix Pérez for the publication of vanguard La Gaceta Literaria.

The comments based on current affairs, the most outstanding players, the main triumphs, the stress due to the rivalry with the Barcelona F.C. are recurrent topics for the most part of the authors.

The footballer’s explanation of fear due to the uncertainty of the unthinkable dynamics in the encounters and the explanation of aspects based on the game, sport are also interesting.

Out of all the different essays which exist, the political sociology of the stadium applied by Cuco Cerecedo in order to explain the political changes of the Transitional Period and the social portrayal based on the experience the people have in the field according to Fernando Díaz-Plaja, attract the attention.

Theatre

Since the fifties, the entity is staged. Life as couple, the jealousy because the husband goes to the football match, the ambiguous situations caused because one person supports the Real Madrid and another one supports the Atlético from Madrid, the justified quarrels by means of football are one of the most exploited elements due to their funniness.

José María Bellido Cormezana achieves one of his best works thanks to the portrayal of the supporters of the Real Madrid in a final of the European Cup.

Moreover, the situation of matches in the Bernabéu stadium, where the results of the football pools are the only hope in order to become rich or the incredible and hard relationship with footballers and intellectual people are some of the aspects staged as well.

Adaptations for television and situation comedies

In the nineties, funniness invaded the serials. The main situation comedy from this age, Farmacia de Guardia, wasn’t inappropriate for football. And thus, it dedicated “El beso de la muerte” to the social experience of the derby between Real Madrid and Atlético from Madrid in 1993.

Other literary curiosities

Footballers and writers

In the last year of the 20th century, the publishing world was surprised due to the unprecedented success of Alfredo di Stéfano and Diego Armando Maradona’s works based on the memoirs. From June till the beginning of November, 2002 Gracias, Vieja- the book based on the president of honor’s memoirs from the Real Madrid- has been all the weeks with the 10 works which are at the top of the lists of sales in Spain. It sold more than 30.000 copies, went beyond 5 editions suddenly and was one of the triumphant works in the Feria del Libro of Madrid (market of book), with a special welcome in Spain among amateurs over 60 years old and young people between 15 and 20, and enormous queues in order to get copies autographed by the author.

However, the literary incursions had also an effect on the forward Juanito and Jorge Valdano’s family memories. The entity’s current General President of Sports has developed a more varied labor thanks to books with summaries of his articles in El País and Marca, thanks to the creation of two anthologies with stories based on football topic and also thanks to an essay about the similarities between the managerial conduct based on teams of work and sports teams.

A writer, applicant for the chairmanship

In the presidential elections, in 1991, the writer Alfonso Ussía applied for candidate. Finally, the president at that time, Ramón Mendoza, won. Ussía is journalist and specialized author in satiric topics. He has dedicated verses and current humorous notes to the club in a lot of papers and in his radio collaborations.

Literary jury

Another alternative as far as the world of letters and football is concerned has been the presence of literary prizes in juries. It is the case of Emilio Butragueño, current Assistant to the General President of Sports, who carries out this function in the reward Relatos en clave de fútbol Jose Luis Garci, took the chair by the film-maker who won an Oscar.
