La Página del Idioma Español is five years old

Sport in a reference website

Jesús Castañón Rodríguez

La Página del Idioma Español is 5 years old. A period of five years as one of the main world references based on the consultation about Spanish language. It was created the 16th of April, in 1996 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in order to contribute to preservation, unity and purity of language and also so as to join in other initiatives directed to show the community made up by 400 million Spanish-speaking people the newest and widest spots by means of the Internet. And it started its broadcasts the 23th of April, in 1996.

Ricardo Soca

It is edited by the Uruguayan journalist Ricardo Soca, who holds the post of Mass Media Manager in the news agency Deutsche Argentur Press. He is also a correspondent in the Argentinian newspaper La Nación , as well as in the broadcasting stations from the BBC (Great Britain),El Tiempo (Uruguay) and Sveriges Radio (National Radio of Sweden).

La Página del Idioma Español is a pioneering Web-page. With an evident vocation for service, it was a landmark because it appeared before the Real Academia Española (Spanish Academy) or Cervantes Institute’s institutional Web-pages. It allows to resolve doubts about linguistic, grammatical and literary subjects and also it can provide clues to carry on with an investigation, as a result of the great variety of subjects which are compiled in the fourteen sections where it is organized: dictionaries, grammar, literature, translation, congresses, etymology, subjects and debates, Spanish language in sports, forums based on discussions, Apuntes magazine, spanglish, virtual stall, radios and the dissemination of the Spanish language with the Cervantes Institute from Brazil.

It provides the latest news about the subjects relating to the Spanish language, as well as linguistic resources, several on-line dictionaries in hundreds, grammatical aspects, links with the world Spanish Press, with the best radios and with the most interesting Web Sites of Latin-American literature. It informs about the latest news which have to do with the main literary contests or competitions, the latest Spanish Academy’s decisions, bibliographical references, the lists of best-sellers, etc. As far as the translators are concerned, it has mixed resources and also welcomes the Apuntes magazine…, the publication referred to translators, in Spanish language of New York (United States of America). And as far as the students of Spanish language are concerned it also welcomes El Espejo, from the Cervantes Institute with headquarters in Sâo Paulo (Brazil) and also edited together with this institution we have El Pizarrón to the resolution of doubts about the apprenticeship of the Spanish language and the consultation of useful materials.

Theory and practice

Its prestige is based on the fact that it doesn’t limit to a mere guide of links. Its success has lain in the fact that it has been included theory and practice of language with studies, reflections and a great variety of resources to show the curious and studious people these aspects in a well-balanced way. It has succeeded in joining Spanish language to culture and work about nearby fields. It has achieved the miracle of the popularization without trivialities, of the dissemination based on practical applications of Spanish language with Anglo-Saxon rigor and also the Rio de la Plata’s spirit: a tendency to the dignified thought in a high level, search for winks which aren’t in any score and the rupture of conventional paradigms or norms to create new horizons, fields based on freedom.

It has been a style which has been well received, above all, by an audience from Spain and United States of America, together with numerous visits from Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Germany, Uruguay, Chile, Sweden and Australia. It has strengthened the presence of the Spanish language in the Internet, in spite of the overwhelming predominance of the English language, it has urged, advanced its expansion and has also popularized its cultural abundance by means of a reference work which has been designated Cervantes Institute in Sâo Paulo, in the year 2000, and which has signed an agreement with La Página del Idioma Español, in order to coordinate tasks to urge the growth of the Spanish language in Brazil.

The Spanish Language in sport

History

The sports Web-page started the 18th of June, in 1997, it was also when Ricardo Soca proposed the creation of a specific section to Jesús Castañón Rodríguez, by means of an e-mail. And after several hours, it was settled the appointment as Coordinator of Sports until it appeared in the Net the 28th of that month.

It was a challenge for the editor of Idioma y deporte. When he received the news, he had to go for a walk for three hours, but he accepted it because that was going to blaze a trail in his researches about the sporting language after accessing to the Internet in August 1996, and also he had seen this system of work in the International and Olympic Committee’s Center of Olympic Studies in Lausana (Switzerland), he had looked up his own works in the scientific net Sibyl for countries whose mother tongue is French. Since then, in November, 1996, he had the energy, courage ready to learn to work through the nets and La Página del Idioma Español’s proposal was an excellent opportunity.

The informative service Noticias Intercom gave a brief description about the starting point, but the most important year for the sport’s development was 1998. Together with the studies, several glossaries appeared in order to be useful for people who weren’t specialists in sports and they also started to be consulted or looked up on line using the scroll in order to see the complete Web-page.

The working method has been the one from Rio de la Plata: dignified thought in a high level and freedom. And every new season two meetings in person were carried out in order to assay interesting aspects and paths for creation. The first meeting was in Madrid, near to the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, at the beginning of August, in 1998, and the second one was in the Copacabana beach from Rio de Janeiro, halfway though August, 1999. They were of use for developing works about the history of the sporting language in the great events and the literary humor with a sporting subject in Jardiel Poncela, as well as to blaze a trail to the gratitude of the great geniuses for the pictorial humor. As in the change of millennium in Lecturas: Educación Física y deportes was carried out a collaboration with the Quino’s unusual and sporting view, after that other works will appear like the one dedicated to Antonio Mingote, the pictorial humorist who holds a post in the Real Academia Española (the Spanish Academy).

Samba spirit

The sports page’s spirit has been and nowadays is a playioca beating (from Gijón -playo- and from Rio de Janeiro -carioca-). It makes good use of the Asturian city’s open spirit to join it with the Rio de Janeiro’s feeling. It joins dynamically the creative nostalgia and the magic improvisation between mists from the Bay of Biscay, the hope, dream based on youth and the innovation of Gijón, with the features of Rio de Janeiro which have to do with charming energy, vitality, intelligent surprises and feelings which fill the heart with hope to the extent of challenging the sun.

It is a samba which welcomes the different tones and rhythms from the Latin-American countries to reflect their fancy in the constant struggle for reaching new sporting aims, their passionate experience and their deeply moved story. It provides a whole view about the main successes and experiences in that romantic art based on matches between the life’s unpleasantness which is sport in Latin America. It makes the peals of surdos (bass drums), caixas (drums)and tamborims from the Nobel Prizes of Literature, the friction’s groans from la cuica and the idiomatic institutions or universities’ reco-reco, the sportsmen/women’s metallic tones from the agogô (double handbell), the supporters’ cavaquinho rhythm and the communication announcers’ puxador’s timbres (soloist voice) could be reinforced and contrasted each other to the extent of leading to euphoria and also to the extent of going further off, further up and stronger in fancy and the emotion of language.

It is a samba which sings the original and unusual development of the information about the sporting language without giving up rigor. A samba which makes known its traditional resources and also resources based on the new technologies, which thinks about the main features which make it special and also distinguishes register levels in its experience as practice, organized activity in associations and mass shows. A samba which appraises the differences between the sporting language and the standard usage of language, analyzing the coexistence of its innovative tendencies and also purists ones, without resorting to disqualifications. And besides, a samba which exerts a respectful look, which is also an accomplice, with sport in order to turn it into a scope of observation and analysis based on the most current linguistic tendencies.

It is a section with a flexible and varied structure, with articles and works drawn up to the rhythm of the Zeca Pagodinho and Beth Carvalho’s samba songs, as well as the Zizi Possi’s sad, subtle and elegant melodies.

To think in Latin-American style

These four years with sports have become an incredible experience. La Página del Idioma Español has been pioneer in including studies or investigations based on the sporting language with its several variants in the Net: the sportsmen/women’s professional language, the transformations this kind of language experiences in its social dissemination and the special changes it adopts in literature. And it has also facilitated clues to several works based on investigations, as well as the access to digital and specialized publications. Between 1997 and 2001, the sports Web-page has developed eleven working fields or paths:

1º) The description based on the present state of language in the field of sport and also the description of culture which sports generates in Spanish.
2º) The presentation of lexical resources with basic terms.
3º) The orientation of technical terms.
4º) Equivalent words in Spanish based on foreign words and correspondences between various languages.
5º) Explanation of keys to the historical evolution of the Spanish language based on sport in its level of dissemination.
6º) Examples of the literary level.
7º) Kiosk of sporting publications classified according to countries.
8º) Outlines of reference books intended for translation.
9º) Pictorial and literary humor based on sports.
10º) Outline of best-sellers.
11º) Analysis of the members of the Real Academia Española (The Spanish Academy)’s sporting works.

The unfathomable paths of sport

The work unfolded in La Página del Idioma Español has prospered through the inscrutable paths of sport, an activity with a great social magnitude and without frontiers.

Firstly, its contents have been considered as reference material in the Conference on co-operation in the field of terminology in Europe, held in Paris (France) in 1999. And they are added to the Web-pages from The Education Departments in Argentina and Spain as educational reference.

Secondly, they have been focal point of the university education in Argentina, Spain and Italy between 1999 and 2001. They have become reference sources for the carrying out of the Giovanna Mapelli’s thesis Il linguaggio del calcio nei giornali sportivi italiani e spagnoli, which has been read in the Univeritá degli Studi di Bergamo (Italy). Its innovative experiences in the Net have been starting point for the university research of Argentina and Spain in the Grupo Científico Comunicación y deporte, from the Center of Olympic Studies and Sciences Applied to Sport José Benjamín Zubiaur (San Luis) and the Scientific Group of Sporting Documentation and Information, from the Upper Council of Sports (Madrid). And also they have been used as reference point in courses based on doctorate from the Complutense University from Madrid and the Valladolid University.

Thirdly, they have been used as reference and working material, in a traditional way between 1997 and 2001 in different editions of the Seminar based on Linguistic Correction Corrección de textos en la prensa escrita (Duques de Soria Foundation), I Encuentro sobre el Idioma Español en el Deporte (Andalusian Institute of Sport), II Jornadas de Documentación e Información Deportiva (Upper Council of Sports- Center of High Efficiency and Investigation in Sporting Sciences), Provincial Course about Scientific and Didactic Updating Comentario lingüístico de textos, (Centers of Teachers and Resources from Medina de Rioseco), III Encuentro Deporte y Ciencias Sociales (Buenos Aires University) and I Máster de Periodismo de Agencia (Efe Foundation and Juan Carlos I University).

Fourthly, the work in La Página del Idioma Español has blazed a trail in the virtual world for educational resources, resources for translators and digital magazines. As far as the educational resources in order to learn vocabulary are concerned, several digital resources connect with El español en el deporte, such as: the Brazilian Weblinguas (Sâo Paulo), the Canadian Claremont Graduate University (Claremont), the Spanish Centro Virtual Cervantes (Madrid), the American Easton Language Education (New York), Net Communications Corp. (San Diego) and Spanish Language Resources-Jorbón (New York), the Dutch one such as Emile Slager Tips en links over Spanien en het Spaans  (Utrecht) and the Peruvian Colegio Peruano Británico (Lima)and Red científica peruana (Lima).

Also, digital resources and dictionaries for translators of French and English into Spanish from Brazil, Canada, and the United States of America are added or included. Its first recommendations go back to 1999 when Julio Juncal, the UNO (United Nations Organization) secretariat in New York’s Division of Translation into Spanish’s public official, worked on a virtual list in Translation related Web Pages (New York). This list was reproduced by the Brazilian Embassy in United States, spread by Carlos Alberto Teixiera in O Globo, and welcomed by the Laboratorio de Biblioteca Digital (Rio de Janeiro). Scott Sadowsky in Spanish English Translation, (Baltimore) and the Canadian company André Moreau & Associates Inc. (Toronto) would join them eventually.

The  El español en el deporte’s work also attracted the different kinds of magazines’ attention, in Argentina, Spain and the United States of America, between 1999 and 2001: magazines for translators like Apuntes (New York); cultural ones, like Ades (Madrid) and Neuróticos.com (San Diego); the ones based on linguistic popularization, like Idiomanía (Buenos Aires) and the ones based on thinking, like Nueva Revista (Madrid).

Fifthly, between 1999 and 2001 it has supplied sporting references, in the professional teams and companies based on football’s official Web pages (like the Real Sporting de Gijón SAD and its newspaper Gol Sporting) or like Futvol.com (the Professional Football League and Real Football Spanish Federation’s server). Besides, it has been recommended as one of the best 44 sporting Web sites in Spanish language by the server Enlaweb (Madrid, 2001) and by the world champion with the Argentinian National team in 1986 and also present Real Madrid’s General Director, Jorge Valdano, in his Web page La zona Valdano.

The constant effort in the Sports Web page of La Página del Idioma Español made possible the participation of magazines specialized in sport in the Advisor Councils -like Lecturas: Educación Física y Deportes, Buenos Aires, since 1998- and also in professional databases likeEF-PRO (Córdoba, Agentine) and the Plataforma Temática de Ciencias del deporte (Barcelona).

Other transformations

The movement of all this samba made possible the publication of one book in 1999 with the compilation of all the articles written up to 1998. It was named Idioma y deporte and had a Ricardo Soca’s epilogue. Its edition with 396 pages was run out in one year and the good reception of its style (the work on the Net learnt in La Página del Idioma Español) was reproduced by the Real Sporting de Gijón for one year in its official newspaper and given out between the supporters in the league matches in the El Molinón stadium.

In the summer of 1999, everything which was learnt made possible the creation of an electronic page in order to continue with the style of the book. This spin off was named Idioma y Deporte. It started definitively after a talk with Ricardo Soca during a night long walk along the Copacabana beach. The carrying out of Idioma y deporte, the son from the sports Web page El español en el deporte began by resolving the technical problem of a digital pages editor by the side of Copacabana Palace hotel. The style created for La Página del Idioma Español has succeeded in Europe (Spain, France, Italy, Holland) and America (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, United States and Peru); whereas its new development has got more visits from America (Argentina, Chile, United States, Mexico and Peru) than from Europe (Spain, Sweden, Italy and France).

Epilogue

La Página del Idioma Español is a reference of Spanish in a lot of fields. In these changeable times where the projects appear and disappear very fast, a period of five years with such a vocation of service to the studious and curious people of the Spanish language is a work worthy of admiration. Let’s congratulate his editor, since in this change of century, his work is considered unanimously as one of the five reference Web-pages which is also obliged for the study of the Spanish language. Its spirit from Rio de la Plata based on the rupture of conventional paradigms to the extent of creating a new horizon, field of freedom and also its contrast of voices have been worth considering. They have made easier the dialogue and the free interchange of knowledge which have carried out in both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
